Once they were safely away from Howard’s house, Emmie’s racing heart slowed, and so did the speed of her rental car.

She couldn’t shake the image of what she had seen earlier. The gruesome image of Howard pinned to the floor and what could only be described as some angel of death hovering over his body, drawing in his spirit.

“At least we know now what we’re up against,” Jason said.

“How well could you see it?” Emmie asked.

“I don’t see ghosts, ever, well… until now, but that thing was right there. Was that a ghost? Do they all look like that to you?”

She shook her head. “I’ve never encountered something like that before. Not anything like the usual spirits I’ve run across so far. This one had no real appearance, no identity… and no trauma.”

“It’s no wonder your life is a mess. I would be too, if I had to deal with that every day.”

“Well, unless you want to break up, you might be seeing a lot of stuff from now on. Or standing by while I see it.” She glanced over. “But thanks for saying that.”

“Better late than never, right?” he said softly. “Still, what was that thing doing to Howard?”

The trauma flashed through her mind, but she pushed it away. “Taking his spirit.”

“Can they do that?”

“I don’t know.”

“So what, or who, could it be?” Jason asked. “Is it even dead if I can see it?”

“Don’t know either. If only Howard had told us, instead of thinking we were incompetents.”

“But maybe if he had told us, that thing might have come for us next.”

Thinking about how the spirit had focused on Emmie for a moment sent a chill up her spine now. It could come for us now because it sure did get a good look at us. “I guess there’s no point in speculating.”

Jason turned his attention back to his phone, flipping through several screens before stopping on one. “Let me see if I can find someone else we can talk to about this. Someone reliable this time.”

“No more talking to anyone. From now on, we’ll just do our own research.”

Jason shook his head slightly. “We’ll need some kind of help, Em. And I know a place—not a person—just a place we can go to sort this out. A library with private rooms to do research. Fortunately for us, we’re in New Orleans, the home of vampires, the occult, and ghosts, so there’s got to be books that tell us what that thing is. That’s why Carey Kali made this area its home.”

Emmie scowled at hearing the organization’s name. “We’ll definitely stay away from them this time.”

“Right.” Jason glanced at his phone’s display again. “Only twenty minutes away. I’m reserving a room now.”

“Perfect.”

A few moments later, the phone pinged and Jason announced, “We got it. He has two hours starting in half an hour. Lucky. I’ll take the two.” After he texted back, he added, “Don’t tell Finn or he’ll bother me to bring him.”

Hearing Finn’s name drew Emmie out of her train of thought.
